Abstract: "Pandora's Voice" consists of a box-shaped music box with an open lid and a bottomless swamp surrounding it. In addition to the music box mechanism, the inside of the music box enclosure contains a computer base and miniature tools for construction, while the outside of the enclosure is lined with working people. The music box plays Richard Strauss' "Metamorphosen," and those who hear it begin to admire the music box. People flock to the box, but the bottomless swamp around it prevents them from reaching it, and it sinks. The music box records the voices of the people who are trapped in the swamp and enthusiastically applaud the box, and continues to play over the original music. When enough people's voices have been collected, the lid of the music box is closed and "Pandora's Voice" is complete.
要旨: "パンドーラーの声"は蓋が開いた箱状のオルゴールと、周囲を取り囲む底なし沼から構成される。オルゴール筐体の内部にはオルゴール機構の他にコンピュータ基盤と建築に必要な道具のミニチュアなどを入れ、筐体の外には働く人間を並べる。オルゴールからはリヒャルト・シュトラウスの『メタモルフォーゼン』が流れ、聴取したものはこのオルゴールの箱を称賛し始める。人々は箱に群がるが周囲の底なし沼に阻まれるため、到達することなく沈んでいく。オルゴールは、沼に捉われながらも箱に熱狂的な喝采を送る人々の声を録音し、その音声を元の曲に重ねて演奏を続ける。十分な量の人々の音声が収集された後、オルゴールの蓋は閉められ"パンドーラーの声"は完成に至る。

Intent: This piece of performance art is about creating experimental music and enjoying the human ridiculousness that is a side effect of that creation. The lamenting music "Metamorphosen" is gradually filled with hopeful voices praising the enclosure. But the voice that was speaking sinks into the mud and dies, with no relief from the enclosure.
意図: この作品は実験音楽の作成とその作成に至る副次的な人間の滑稽さを楽しむパフォーマンスアートです。『メタモルフォーゼン』という嘆きの音楽は、筐体を褒めそやす希望にあふれた声で次第に埋もれてゆきます。しかしその声を発していたものは泥の中へと沈み徒死します、筐体から救いが与えられることもなく。

As for Pandorar's box, it no longer needs any explanation. When Pandorah, the first human woman, opened the box given to her by gods, various evils and despairs came out of it. Startled, Pandorah closed the lid and only ἐλπίς remained in the box. The common explanation is that ἐλπίς left at the bottom of the box is "hope", and that hope still remains with humanity. One theory is that ἐλπίς is "omen", and that because the omen was trapped in the box, humanity is no longer able to know the dreaded future.
パンドーラーの箱に関してはもはや説明はいらないでしょう。人類最初の女性であるパンドーラーが神から与えられた箱を開けてしまうと、中から様々な災い、絶望が飛び出す。驚いたパンドーラーは蓋を閉めてしまい「ἐλπίς」のみが箱の中に残った。この箱の底に残った「ἐλπίς」が「希望」であり、希望は人類の元にまだ残っているというのが一般的な説明です。一説には「ἐλπίς」は「予兆」であるともされ、予兆が箱の中に閉じ込められたため人類は恐るべき未来を知ることができなくなったとされることもあります。

Now, is ἐλπίς really hope? Do people who continue to cling to the hope of the box while sinking in the mud seem happy? In the first place, is the box really hope? Are they even hearing the voice coming from the box?
さて、「ἐλπίς」とは本当に希望なのでしょうか？泥沼に沈みながら箱という希望に縋り続ける人々、その姿は幸福に見えるでしょうか？そもそもその箱は本当に希望ですか？きちんと箱から流れる声は聴こえているのでしょうか？

Isn't it because humanity believe that there is still hope that we have to face calamities? If there was no hope, would we have ever despaired? Wouldn't it be happier to make friends with despair from the start?
人類は希望が残っていると信じてしまうから、災いに立ち向かわなくてはならなくなったのではないでしょうか？希望が無ければ絶望することもなかったのではないでしょうか？いっそ、最初から絶望と仲良くする方が幸せなのではないでしょうか？

Will the resulting music box sounds like hope? Or will it sounds like despair?
果たして出来上がったオルゴールの音は希望に聴こえるのでしょうか？絶望に聴こえるのでしょうか？

Ari, I'm pretty sure you refused to cooperate on Project ARCA, unlike me. So I assumed you weren't interested in the Arcade Cabinet. That's why I was surprised when the Foundation told me about the discovery of your work "Pandora's Voice" and its project proposal.
アリ、君は確か筐体計画に関して協力を拒否していたよな？俺と違って。だから君は筐体に興味がないと思っていた。それゆえ発見された君の作品"パンドーラーの声"とその企画案を財団のやつに聞かされたときは驚いたぜ。

You didn't mention it in your proposal, but I'm pretty sure it's an irony to Project ARCA. They didn't give us any details when they requested for our cooperation, but you've got it all figured out.
企画案では触れていなかったが、ありゃどう考えても筐体計画に対する皮肉だろ？協力要請の時は詳細を聞かされてなかったくせに、ちゃっかり内容を把握しやがって。

Well, it doesn't matter. The issue is the location where it was found. It was the base of a small cult group called the Order of the Iron Rust Fruit. When the Foundation's agents discovered the music box, the lid was closed and all the cult members were dead in the bottomless swamp.
まあそれはいい。問題は発見された場所だ。鉄錆の果実教団とかいう小物のカルト集団の拠点だった。財団のエージェントが発見したときははオルゴールの蓋は閉じていて、教団員は全員底なし沼の中でオシャカサマになっていた。

The agents found out that…… the IRF guys were in the middle of a ritual to summon a divine being. Apparently they did it out of desperation for the apocalypse and to seek salvation. However, according to the GOC's light analysis, even if they were able to summon it, there would have been no salvation, just a nasty asshole who would destroy the area. But it's true that it's nasty, and if the cultists hadn't been wiped out and the ritual had succeeded, there's a chance that our project would have been sabotaged.
エージェントが調べてわかったことなんだがな……。鉄錆の奴らはなんでも神格存在召喚儀式の真っ最中だったそうだ。終末に絶望し救済を求めてそんなことを行ったらしい。もっともオカ連の奴らの軽い分析じゃ、召喚できたとして救済なんてことはなく、ただ辺りを破壊しつくす厄介なアホしか出てこなかったみたいだが。ただまぁ、厄介なことは確かで、もし教団員が全滅せず儀式が成功してたら俺たちの計画が妨害されていた可能性もあったらしい。

つまり、だ。お前の作品は俺たちを助けたんだ。

I don't know, man. The content of your work criticizes what we're doing, but your work, or rather you, is acting in favor of us. What the hell is your position? You wrote about "making friends with despair," but aren't you really the one who's longing for the appearance of hope to overcome despair?
よくわかんねぇんだよ。作品の内容は俺たちがやってることを批判しているのに、作品というかお前は俺たちに与する行動をしている。お前はいったいどういう立場なんだ？「絶望と仲良く」などと書いていたが、ほんとはお前こそ絶望を打ち破る希望が現れるのを冀っているんじゃないのか？

I've long since given up on that project, and on this world. I've heard that the world is going to be destroyed in three weeks, but to be honest, I'm not really feeling it. So I'm not taking sides. I'll reach out to you when I feel like it, or I'll put a bullet in your brain from behind. Iron Rust, was it? I put the prototype in their base because they were a little noisy. That's all. I don't want you to overrate me to help you.
僕はとっくに諦めているよ。その計画も、この世界も。あと3週間で世界が滅ぶらしいけど正直ピンと来てないしね。だから僕はどちらの味方でもない。気が向いたら手を差し伸べるし、後ろから脳天に銃弾を撃ち込むこともする。鉄錆だったっけ？その拠点に試作品を置いたのは、ちょっと奴らがノイジーだった。ただそれだけのことさ。助けるだとか買い被られちゃ困るぜ。
