The Mighty Lore and Aesthetics Contest

Phew! After all the effort, the weeks of training, the dozens of broken ice axes and a few power naps on the gigantic sheets of paper, you have just hoisted yourself to the top of the Great Literary Beanstalk. As you pull your backpack up on your shoulders, you see a cabin of gigantic proportions looming before you: perched atop its misty island, the House of Lore stands. Its sheer size is making you feel as though you were a little mouse, and you are already looking for a way in. Fortunately for you, near one of the hinges of the wooden door is a crack. Come on, you're almost there!
You jump several meters down onto a tiled floor, and your landing echoes through a corridor. In a swift motion, you collect your grappling hook before surveying your surroundings. Each tile is the size of a small apartment and the black-and-white pattern is giving you the impression of standing on a gigantic chessboard. But are you the bishop, the rook or one of the pawn? A pleasant odor attracts your sense of smell. It seems that someone is cooking in a room further down the corridor. Intrigued by the odor, you decide to remove your shoes to make yourself quieter and trust your nose to guide you.
You pass through a peculiar "Lore Bureau." In this room made of the rarest wood, the candle lighting is mirrored by the immaculate floorboards upon which no one has set foot in the longest time. Suddenly, something catches your attention. On a lectern, the book series A Song of Ice and Fire in Quarto format sits majestically, along with an additional, unknown volume. Taking a closer look, it appears that tiny pieces of paper, coming from God-knows-where, are flying up toward the pages, as if a recording of a book being torn apart was being played backwards. In awe, you once again smell the irresistible aroma and move on forward, but not without noticing familiar elements on your way. A bust of Isaac Asimov, with robotic features, sits besides a portrait of Marcel Proust, just above what appears to be a worn computer monitor flashing a title: The Elder Scrolls VI.
After a few minutes, you eventually reach a large, closed door. The delicious aroma that has brought you there is leaking from the medieval-looking keyhole, which is big enough to let you through. Now acquainted with this strange climbing sport, you throw your grappling hook onto a giant splinter and begin your ascent. God, is it hard to focus with this wonderful smell filling your lungs!
When you finally reach the height of the keyhole, you are treated to an unexpected sight. A… cooking class?
"Splendid, splendid, my little goblins!" a bipedal giant with green skin rejoices, ladle in hand and wearing a toque blanche. "I can see your little lores are mixing, it's beautiful!"
"Chef, Chef," a similar-looking creature interjects, with a more childlike appearance. "I've got greenish clumps in my lore!"
"Let me have a taste…" the teacher says before immersing his ladle in the titanic goblin's cauldron. "Ah, yes, a little too much worldbuilding. Mmmmh, try adding some emotional tension!" the chef suggests as he hands out what looks like Gulliver's salt shaker.
"Um… Chef?"
In the back of the classroom, a cauldron is making very large bubbles as a panicked, juvenile titan watches.
"Woah, what's going on in there, my little Kaos?"
"I… I dropped my dice in the pot…"
"Oh no," the goblin chef mutters before starting to scream. "Take cover, everyone!"
As the pot of lore explodes, you see a wave of multicolored soup surge towards you, preceded by a dozen fleeing colossal goblins.
The Mighty Lore and Aesthetics Contest
For this contest, you will need to write an article using two randomly drawn constraints: an aesthetic from the list below, and a prompt from the mighty Pot of Lore, which is filled to the brim with lore elements from many branches. The Pot of Lore is mischievous: it will not give you a lore element from your own branch. Your entry must be published on your own branch, in your own language, following the normal publication process. It can be translated to the INT wiki as well, by yourself or another translator. To participate, inscribe your name in the table below and the organizers will roll your constraints.
At the end of the voting period, a winner will be selected for each branch. Then, the translated versions of all branch nominees on the INT wiki will compete in a bonus round to determine the bonus INT winner. Translators are encouraged to translate entries to the INT wiki, or to other branches, so that everyone can enjoy them! Not too sure about coldposting translations? No worries: a list of reviewers willing to help you is available below.

The Rules
ルール
- You must post a single entry. Collaborations are allowed.
- For collabs, you can either register together from the start, or join someone after they got their constraints (and abandon yours).
- Your entry can be an SCP, a tale or a GoI format. Joke articles are allowed.
- Your entry must be posted to your own branch following the normal posting process for that branch. You can also translate it to the INT wiki if you so wish, or wait for a translator to do it.
- To participate, add your wikidot username to the table below and specify your branch (i.e. the branch you will post your entry to). You will then be assigned a random aesthetic and lore prompt, excluding those from the branch you specified.
- If you are dissatisfied with your constraints, you can ask for a re-roll of the aesthetic, lore element or both. That re-roll will be final.
- You can participate on several branches if you feel like it. In that case, you will have to post one entry per branch, with different constraints for each.
- Entries published outside of the posting period specified below will be disqualified.
- The winning entry for each branch will be the one with the highest rating on that branch. For the bonus INT round, it is the translations of the winning entries that will be judged; the highest rated translation on the INT wiki will be the bonus winner.
- You are not allowed to vote on your own entry, as it would give collabs by several people an unfair advantage on small branches.
- If you do vote on your own entry regardless, your vote will be substracted from the entry's final score.
- During the bonus INT round, you may not vote on the winning entry from your own branch. This eurovision-like rule is to encourage users to read and vote on entries they are less likely to be familiar with.
- "Your own branch" will be determined by checking on which branch(es) you have voted or commented on contest entries, or posted one yourself. This will be automated with the help of an open source python script.
- If you upvote or downvote said entry regardless, your vote will be substracted from the entry's final score.
- You can, of course, refrain from voting/commenting on your own branch during the first round to be able to vote for your own branch in the second round. But we feel that this is against the spirit of the contest and discourage it.
- If your entry has supplement pages, only votes on the main page will count.
- INT staff and contest organizers reserve the right to:
- Disqualify entries that clearly do not respect their assigned constraints and are off-topic for the purpose of this contest (we'll be lenient unless it's an extreme case).
- Take any relevant action against malicious voting patterns and all behaviour comparable to cheating.
- And the most important rule of all: Have fun!
The Constraints
制約
The aesthetic: Generally speaking, the aesthetic is the ambiance or atmosphere that is expected in your work. Settings, tones, characters, vocabulary and topics all play a role in how the aesthetic is perceived by the reader. Narrative works like tales might make it easier to convey, but it is entirely possible to incorporate it in an SCP. Be creative!
The lore prompt: It must have an important place in your work. It doesn't have to be the only topic of the article, though: it is up to you to decide how you incorporate it and how much of your work focuses on it, as long as it's more than a mere namedrop.
- Abstract — Being the exact opposite of illusions, the abstract does not try to represent existing objects or subjects, but instead uses graphical or literary patterns apparently devoid of meaning but which convey emotions and impressions through the viewer's interpretation (conscious or unconscious).
- Mushroomcore — This aesthetic revolves around fungi and their role in the collective imaginary. Woodlands are under the spotlight, through the filter of the duality of life and death: fungi become the symbol of growth as well as putrefied matter. The afterlife may also be involved, as fungal growth is often associated to fairy rings, subterranean worlds and final resting places for the dead.
- Academia — This aesthetic revolves around the act of voluntary learning. The search for knowledge, truth and enlightenment are key principles. This will to learn can be directed towards any science, hard or soft, natural or not, and reading is of course an important activity.
- Mythpunk — This aesthetic revolves around transposing iconic mythical figures or stories into a modern environment: it features urbanization of the story, reflection on the mythical elements compared to the more plausible ones (contemporary or futuristic), as well as a more elaborate, complex and literary approach to the plot. It is therefore a figurative rewrite of common mythical elements of the collective imaginary, accompanied by denunciation, rejection of society and struggle against order, which are the base principles of the punk movement.
- Liminal spaces — This aesthetic revolves around so-called transition spaces, i.e. spaces that exist only to accommodate the temporary passage of a large number of people, but presented outside of this context and without any activity. These transition spaces include but are not limited to: train station hallways, school corridors, cafeterias, supermarkets, bathrooms, a cluster of empty rooms, a doorstep… it is therefore a very visual and descriptive aesthetic, which underlines the uncanny and unsettling vibe these spaces give off when they're not in use.
- Old web — This aesthetic revolves around the first baby steps of the web and promotes personal poetic expression through basic multimedia (GIFs, clip-art, slideshows…) and senescent digital interfaces. Apart from the intrinsic feeling of nostalgia, the point is also to honor an era of artistic, individual freedom at the opposite of contemporary web-design trends which are more restrictive and down-to-earth, as well as the current monopoly big companies have over the web. The users are not afraid of things hideous, ugly, absurd or illegible, although this is not an endgame and this aesthetic can also be conveyed through beauty. Here is a exaggerated example.
- Cottagegore — An old-timey, rural ambiance with common elements such as agriculture, modest dwellings, a way of life close to nature but mixed with darker themes in relation to death and unsettling, disturbing apparitions. Expect occultism and antique sorcery, carnivorous plants and haunted windmills.
- Sovietwave — An extension of the soviet aesthetic from the Cold War, full of nostalgia and positivism. Often reuses the values and imagery of soviet communism to show its details or even its potential revival in the future, for example through space exploration or the unification of humanity. Although this aesthetic doesn't have to praise the ensemble in every way, it is definitely not criticism and must remain indulgent.
- Hippie — A 60s' counter-culture, the hippie movement uses colorful imagery, sometimes surreal and reminiscent of the visuals induced by cannabis and LSD which are often consumed among hippie groups, as well as the values of pacifism and fraternity. Community life, collaborative resistance to the world's dangers through mutual support and wishing for an unrealistically positive utopia are recurrent themes.
- Fantasy — This aesthetic revolves around constructing a fictional universe relying on myths, fairy tales and folkloric creatures. These can be integrated into our modern society to various extents, originate from a past era or exist independently from humanity: the main aspect being that their existence is unambiguous, and that suspension of disbelief is involved, since the writing is not supposed to depict plausible or realistic events. Although fantasy works are at the center of this aesthetic, enjoying and copying them (reading, role-play, costumes) is also permissible.
- Rockabilly — This aesthetic revolves around the beginnings of Rock'n'roll, during the early 50s in the United States. it is defined by unique clothing and musical consistency.
- Gloomcore — Solitary Nordic forest ambiance. Gloomcore revolves around the beauty of natural environments like cliffs, pebble beaches or mountain lakes. Gloomcore doesn't have to be grim, but some melancholy is involved, the environments it describes are often blanketed in cold light. It is also commonplace to include a hint of mystery, for instance with gloomy, unexplored nooks and crannies.
- Steampunk — The age of steam, cogs and pistons! The steampunk aesthetic revolves around the retro-futurism concept applied to the first industrial revolution. Often associated to the victorian era for our British neighbors, it is one of the most common aesthetics in fiction, so much so that it became its own sub-genre. Works from Jules Verne, Hayao Miyazaki or H.G. Welles are a good source of inspiration.
- Cyberpunk — Visions of a violent, unequal dystopian society with ubiquitous technological advances (notably cybernetic) which often dictate its organization. The world is often controlled by mighty privatized groups and/or a despotic state, allowing street laws and criminal cartels to flourish in the more impoverished areas. This vision is strongly pessimistic and leaves little room for moral values.
- Vulture culture — Dust, skulls, dried flowers and taxidermy… this theme will perhaps ring a bell for those who have seen movies by Caro and Jeunet. This aesthetic is about cabinets of curiosities with a claustrophobic vibe, on one hand unsettling like a psychopath's home, on the other hand reassuring like a grandmother's apartment. The collections are often compulsive, maybe warm with filth or methodically cold, between pinned butterflies, old leather-bound books and glass jars filled with unidentified findings.
- Tropical — The Tropical aesthetic is postcard-worthy: white beaches, deep blue waters, flourishing vegetation, all about relaxing and drinking cocktails served in coconuts. Mostly a very idealized Épinal print, but not incompatible with a certain form of adventure, from shipwrecks to lost temples… but always relaxed!
- Solarpunk — A futuristic utopia in a healthier and more responsible world, solarpunk introduces a more durable society thanks to new technologies and humans' voluntary tendencies which allow for balanced interactions with their environment. Power is now a minor issue because of the autonomous organisation of societies, and human society intertwines and fuses with nature through technology.
- Futurism — An Italian avant-garde movement from the early 20th century, futurism can be summarized in two words: violence and speed. Futurism is an exaggeration of industrial modernity, its machines, its fast paces, and perpetual change — its partisans try to kill classical aesthetics and artistic codes from the ancient world. All about smoggy metropolises, turbulent planes and furious cars. Glorifying "masculine values," courage, war, death, some futurists embraced Mussolini's fascism, the first one being Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, founder of the movement and author of the first manifesto. A more heated version of "dieselpunk."
- Ocean grunge — The ocean is vast, so is its imagery. There are sadly no surfboards or pretty beach girls here: this theme focuses on the viscous, harsh and grim aspects of the ocean, cold colors, stormy weather, the strange surfaces of shellfish, corals and the ocean floor.
- Desertwave — The desertwave aesthetic doesn't only focus on the vast, inhospitable terrain, but on those who adapted to survive there. People (such as the Mongols), fauna (such as fennec foxes), and flora (such as cacti). Well, that and also the inhospitable terrain.
- Dark romanticism — A major movement from the 19th century, dark romanticism has nothing to do with little cupids and pastel hues: it is about Man opening Himself to new geographical, historical or mystical elements which fascinate Him, sometimes to a maddening extent… Vampires, goths, Arthurian or Celtic lore are common topics, as long as they remain foggy and fantasized.
- Kidcore — A world of toys and candy, "Toy Story-esque" for many and inspired from the 90s: full of vivid colors, simple shapes and smiling animals, everything smells like sugar and over-excitement.
- Fanfare — Circuses, fairs and amusements parks, the fanfare style covers aesthetics related to entertainment, amazement and more generally drawing the public's attention. Be it sounds, colors or lights, everything is more intense, sometimes even messy.
- Sterile — A claustrophobic, oppressive ambiance that is conveyed through cleanliness. It mainly features white immaculate spaces, items with simple, smooth shapes to prevent injuries, and absence of life. Distancing between people (cameras, speakers, protective windows…) also plays an important part.
- Atompunk — Far from the unsettling fog of steampunk and dieselpunk, atompunk corresponds to the very optimistic golden age of sci-fi in the 50s. It is an extension of the "model family" ideal of this era applied to space colonization, with all the benefits that nuclear energy, novel materials, force fields and other such stuff can bring to humanity to make daily life a utopia (almost).
- Voidpunk — This aesthetic relies on a feeling of not belonging to humanity. This can manifest in various ways: rejecting the norm, feeling rejected by one's peers, distancing from human emotions, detachment from fixed notions of identity and gender… be it forced or reclaimed, this feeling defines voidpunk, which is about celebrating what's different, undefinable, changing, unknown or even existential void. (update since people are having a hard time with this aesthetic: listen to an episode of Welcome to the Night Vale, it sums up the idea pretty well)
- Vacation Dadcore/Beauf — From Magnum to Patrick Chirac, you already know this aesthetic. It is not just about heavenly beaches (they are rarely so in the end) but more about lazy sunbathing and man-madeness: squeaky crocs, pink aloha shirts, polyester tents and concrete peers that deface the seashore; throwaway cameras and pétanque balls, everything is there for you to bring back wonderful memories, authentic or not, until next year's vacation.
- Monkeycore — This aesthetic revolves around returning to a primitive primate state. It is about expressing rejection of modern human complexity and a wish to return to simpler times, without systemic organization or philosophy. The motto of this movement is "Reject humanity, return to the monkey."
- Byzantine — Very grand, very rich, very serious, three traits that dictated everything in Byzantium, but also Venice and Cluny: the Byzantine style is linked to excess, but always with the goal of elevating the human soul, be it with numerous marble columns, ubiquitous gilding, silk and gemstones, but also the extreme seriousness of those who inhabit these places: strict popes and matriarchs who value nothing more than dignity. Everything is a lot, sometimes perhaps too much, too complicated, too rich, too glorious for mere mortals…
- Fin de siècle/Decadent — A reaction to modernity and the abandonment of old morals, the Late Century spirit made the last two decades of the 19th century into a long sunset. Evoking the myth of Roman decline, the "decadentists" see around them a declining civilization and a corrupt society. This sentiment is associated to the idea of a physical and moral degeneracy of the nobility, whose lineages go extinct from consanguinity and futility. Fin de siècle works are therefore laden with the themes of ennui, neurosis, decomposition and death. But a decadent hero's attitude is also deeply ambiguous, sometimes celebrating and honoring this decline; an inflammatory cynic, he enjoys shocking others through deviant sexual practices and blurring the line between genders.
- Marginal — Revolving around anarchist milieus, punk, homelessness and zones à défendre, the marginal style describes the aesthetic of squatters and all those rejected by society — or rejecting society. It often implies precariousness balanced by resourcefulness, makeshift gear, survival, solidarity, but also violence in both directions.
- Vaporwave — Antique statues, grids, pastel pink and blue, palm trees, Japanese kanji: the vaporwave aesthetic is a massive collage. Nostalgia for the 70s and 80s — ironic or not — holds a key role, especially through technology: early computers, audio tapes, VHS, as well as anything evoking blurry memories: distorted and slowed sounds, glitched images… obsessed with big cities, often at night, vaporwave is also an ambiguous commentary on consumerism — American-style malls are one of its favorite decors.
- Edo/Traditional Japan — An oriental atmosphere centered around tradition and customs: it is the great era of blooming cherry trees populating haiku, but also of a very "precious" society, tidily dictated by Confucianism, where the social layers populated by shoguns, samurais and geisha strengthen their hierarchy through an abundance of respect, codes and overall fuss.
- Corporate — An office atmosphere with its open-spaces, its bulky computers and its potted plants, filled with managers in brown tuxedos and more or less competent employees. Make fun of the corporate world, the jargon and the anglicisms, the unending meetings and the absurdity of office work. "We must synergize the product data to ideate new buzzword deadlines."
- Afrofuturism — An ambiance featuring a prosperous Africa which used the future and the past to its advantage: sci-fi technology and ancient traditions blend into a delectable mixture.
- Countryside — Far from the city, this aesthetic revolves around rural areas and their peaceful lifestyle: cultivated fields, hay bales, fishermen, clock towers and countryside bistros are to be expected, from Marcel Pagnol to Little House on the Prairie.
- Stonepunk — This aesthetic revolves around the evolution of a prehistoric society, real or fantasized (looking at you, the Flintstones). Flint tools and dinosaurs possibly on the menu, sound the aurochs horns!
- Polar — Between a hostile, frozen environment and the safety of isolated labs that feel just as cold, this aesthetic mainly revolves around survival and a difficult daily life in small groups, aboard ships or scientific bases which often do not stay intact the entire way.
- Scene — !!! h0i girls x3 check out my MySpace (I)O(I) new glittery hairstyle + upd4te on my relationship, 4 months already with zeboss48 !! OoO — Yes, we are in the mid-2000s, we are teenagers and we rant about our everyday issues, we learn to know each other. Emo sprinkled in glitter, vivid colors and glimmery GIFs (or horrid GIFs, you decide). (update since people are having a hard time with this aesthetic: it is not just parody, check out Bring Me The Horizon's music videos for instance.)
- Masquerade — Centered around Venetian carnivals and the Commedia dell'arte, this aesthetic mixes strange porcelain masks and vast stretches of red velvet into a parade both elegant and unsettling. Rather than bourgeois ball dances, the idea is to convey an uncanny strangeness, where the person fades behind the costume, where the music comes from an unknown direction, and where the water's surface reflects fireworks which are absent from the air…
- Spacial — From the coldness of intergalactic space to the heat of burning stars, this aesthetic revolves around the sheer scale of the universe, the void, and the excitement it can induce. If you have doubts, just look up on a summer night and gaze at the sky.
- Backpacking — The backpacking aesthetic doesn't focus on a single country, but on the themes of travelling to many destinations and visiting many places. Picture postcards and road maps: whether you're exploring or fleeing, it's is all about accumulating memories and traces from all the seven continents.
- Utopia — A perfect world, where all are equal, peaceful and live without having to worry about what comes the next day. Without going as far as the Care Bears, still. Etymologically, it is also a place that doesn't exist.
- Post-apocalyptic — To talk about a world destroyed by a nuclear war, an unending winter, a raging epidemic… either immediately after or much later.
- Web — You can reference the Old Web aesthetic from earlier, with the distinction that this aesthetic revolves around the current internet, which is designed to be efficient and refined, not at all flashy or rough.
- After Hours — What is lurking in our peripheral vision, hidden in the darkness, residing in the nocturnal silence?
- Spring — The season of renewal, of growing plants and blooming flowers. Life slowly resumes after idling for the winter.
- Summer — Infernal heat, white beaches and wheat fields undulating in the wind. The sun bathes all in its ardent rays.
- Autumn — A walk through the golden forest amidst falling leaves, rains heralding the coming of winter and shortening days.
- Winter — An evening in a log cabin watching the snowfall, your nose turned red from the freezing wind. Is that a sled, up there, on the roof?
Are you staring at my insides? How lewd. - The Pot of Lore
A large number of these elements were translated during the translation initiative that preceded the contest. Thanks to everyone who participated!

https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/lore
